We found that the metro and train route to Versailles very easy to navigate and the free audio available with the entrance ticket was all that we needed as we spent an entire day touring the royal palace, the extensive gardens & canal, the Petit and Grand Trianon.
Our advice would be to purchase the entrance ticket in advance via internet so as to skip the purchasing line on the day. However, still be prepared for possibility of long entrance time depending on the hour you get there.
The day was a feast for the eyes and a whirl of clicking cameras ...the following is a sampling of what our day was like :
Hall of Mirrors
There is a side door on the left of the room where Marie-Antoinette tried to escape the storming of the palace back in 1792.
Where King Louise XVI and Queen dined in full view of the gathered attendees
Canvas of the Coronation by J.L.David - there is the same canvas on display in the Louvre ...eehmm.. which is the original and which the copy ??
Lots of gorgeous porcelain collection in the palace
Lunch @ Angelina Chateau Versailles
