Awaiting Awakening

So...after a long hiatus, I am reopening this blog to try and put to record some intervening travels. Since my last post (pre-Pandemic), it's been in my thoughts whilst life's numerous episodes joyous and otherwise intrude. Yes, familial health trials & crisis has made up for some of the delay but mostly, I've found alternate distractions to navigate the days resulting in successive postponements. Even more causal is the ease and efficiency of instagram uploads ...they have relegated my blog writings to an outdated medium.

We have not stopped our travels. Ofcourse the 2020 world pandemic totally derailed what was supposed to have been our return to China and South Asia in January 2020. I suppose one the reasons I've come to revisiting the blog is the anticipation of our planned trip next February 2025. This would represent a 14 year gap from our earlier trip. It is time ..& we have much to catch up on re the Middle Kingdom.

Pre-occupation with the latest geo-political turmoil has been one of my distractions after retirement. When one finally has no excuses coupled by a new found curiosity about the globe we inhabit. For me, the dawning came slowly and gradually as I engaged in some independent sources of news mediums( books, documentaries, podcasts, youtube, Twitter/X, TICTOK..etc) to gain insight. Steadily, I realized the veil of lies I've actually been brought along through decades of blissful ignorance. Realizing a bit at first during T's first presidency run only to find out to my utter amazement that my newly learnt reality was only scratching the surface. In fact, my initial indignation back in 2016 has been entirely turned on its head by successive revelations over this decade. Suffice it to say the silver lining of having had such a loathsome character as T has been the deconstruction of a well orchestrated facade. The effect of his ascendance has been to ripoff the mask of the opposing side exposing the utter HYPOCRISY, the entrenched ruse enacted upon its citizenry, which remarkably supersedes the brashness, vulgarity and naked decreptitude of the other.

So what would your prefer, one is made to ask? To be confronted with the choice that you either live with & accept governance by an individual full of bluff & bluster, in your face style to celebrate raw baser human instincts as the way of the world; our existence is not to aspire but to survive OR to be perpetually hoodwinked and gaslighted into unspeakable hypocrisy that makes our existence a kind of Kabuki theatre of the absurd?

Feelings of defeat, dejected anguish as we continue to witness the most depraved genocide of modern history. Do I comfort myself with the lens of new spiritualism and enlightened gurus who espouse with confidence that our consciousness once beyond this dense planet of third dimension is one of no judgment? ...in fact all is well and perfect? The multiverse is vast and infinite. What we are witnessing is just a transient blip. Quantum physics appears to be catching up to recognize the possibility of this complex web of consciousness and light energy transcending time, dimension and our little universe. Do I then subscribe to their belief that suffering has its own purpose in the grand scheme of things...things our confined small brain cannot possibly comprehend? Thus to react strongly, driven by our duality, innate sense of injustice and humane feelings of distress for the victims are in fact unnecessary and unwarranted? This level of passion needs to be tamed and tampered down to detachment. Yet, what is that age old adage ? "ALL that evil needs to thrive is for good men to do nothing ?" Then again, this idea is put forth in the context of our lowly dimension afterall.

Evoke detachment, acceptance... what a comforting thought when I could no more mentally sustain their torment. Bereft yet immobilized by distance and circumstance… scrolling online genocidal horrors. What I lack in rebel initiative is aided by a natural pragmatism. Can my marginal impact really help to change what we now face? I can only applaud the young students & active groups resisting the state agenda along the sidelines, giving $$ and likes and hopeful encouragement. Need to affect more... but what mockery I tell myself to think that I could emit real change in this geopolitical sphere all the while admonishing self that if one is to truly practice higher spiritualism one needs to lose ones ego, accept tiniest impact since one little ripple is what starts it off. Wonder when and how I am ever to square this dichotomy.

In any event, I've digressed ...here to be posted should be our latest trips to doc the passage of our golden years.

SFO & Laguna Shores

A July Kaleidoscope - Bustling Bay Life, Soaring Sequoias & Lively Laguna

'Live in the sunshine,
 Swim in the sea,
 Drink the wild air'
            -Ralph Waldo Emerson
California living... for about two weeks on a visit to reconnect with daughter& son-in-law. Great change of scenery and the younger set showed us one of the local  favorite weekend excursions  - Tomales Bay @ Point Reyes for oysters !

After stocking up for provisions at the Cowgirl Creamery Cantina  (known for 3x cream cheese Mt. Tam) & neighboring farmers market, we cobbled together quite a spread of raw oysters & clams, kale salads, cheese and home baked sourdough bread, compliments of Gabriel

A hike was in order after our oyster picnic

Staying a week in the core of union square - Club Donatello was a real convenience - close to trolley, museum, theater,...but of course the ubiquitous street roaming homeless people ..something to never get used to - CA needs to find a real solution to this crisis

But nothing can really take away the charm of the Bay area vibes - pleasant days for roaming the myriad dowtown streets where SFO's  ~15 distinct neighborhoods intersect and mesh together organically, as soon as one turns a corner so to speak

Took in the MOMA's Andy Warhol exhibit. The take away... whatever you do, do it with conviction and grandeur! It appears go big and go bold was the formula for Andy's commercial pop culture success

What a novel idea! And thanks to Yuri to recommend this choice to us - as part of our visit to MOMA, the lunch at In Situ was such a treat , one for the palette as well as for the eyes! The menu features some signature dishes from chefs from around the world. Its a tasting menu that's actually both affordable & filling

Don't each dish resemble a work of Art - just like some of the abstract tableau pieces I just finished touring...aka Ellsworth Kelly ..lol

It's a typical Bay area morning, a screen of fog hung throughout the coast as we alighted from the northwest corner of SFO on the rugged stretch of cypress forest bordered by steep cliffs plunging to the misty sea.  The coastal hike is an easy saunter for a Sunday morning, although I should have asked first re beverage stops..warning - there a none (nor washrooms)  for the 1.5 miles to and fro...

After hike cocktail & catch up on our drama queen's light -hearted b*#*ch session du jour ...lol ...next day was fine dining by the Embarcadero - Angler. It's notable due to chef Joshua Skenes and Saison Hospitality. Its central feature is the open wood fire kitchen  Have to handed to SFO younger generation to introduce us to something special - Angler landed at the top of Esquire's best restaurant list for 2018. It is a 'sea-life focused' restaurant  ( moon jellyfish, sea cucumbers & uni hit the menu) Yet local bounty sourced from a small collection of hunters, ranchers & farmers with knowledge of microclimate produce to inspire our palates with peak tastes ...try the chicken -  wow!

Our last time in Napa was in the off season of Jan '15 so we decided to drive ourselves to visit the area again in the summer heat of July. We covered the area Yountville to Calistoga via route 29 before turning back south via the Silverado trial after grabbing the famous fried chicken

of Ad Hoc /Addendum ..a local favorite

Next day was devoted to touring the Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park - Took in Passport to the Universe (Tom Hanks) and the earth Imax show, biosphere butterfly exh.
Here's Claude the Albino alligator - special resident of Cal Science Academy
One of the highlights of our trip was to finally take in the Hamilton broadway musical.

Such serendipity! Just as we were dining at Anglers two nights prior, Cy's boss called to offer her free tickets to exact showing we were to attend! This was their 2nd viewing  but our first ...they had prepared us for the fast clip of lyrical rap by playing it on car rides throughout the week, definitely helps

Our last full day in SFO was to ride rental bikes from Fisherman's Wharf across the Golden Gate Bridge into Sausalito - was a bit of an exertion for moi (not being a habitual cyclist) but very scenic and fun, would definitely recommend!

Sausalito - name comes from the Spanish meaning "small willow grove. Beautiful as I remembered it ..no time to linger this visit or dine by their waterside seafood restaurant Scoma's as I recalled doing last visit.
We lined up to take the ferry back to SFO dockside ...wanted to give plenty of time for a meetup with our kids back near our hotel to try out 'happy hour' fare in Farallon

At Farallon, oysters & drinks at happy hour and family styled meal -farewell for now kids, ...we'll be off to see the Sequoias very next day!

'The greatest delight which the fields and woods minister, is the suggestion of an occult relation between man and the vegetable. I am not alone and unacknowledged. They nod to me, and I to them. The waving of the boughs in the storm, is new to me and old. It takes me by surprise, and yet is not unknown. Its effect is like that of a higher thought or a better emotion coming over me, when I deemed I was thinking justly or doing right.'
                    - Ralph Waldo Emerson

We stayed 3 days at Wuksachi lodge in the massive Sequoia and King Canyon parkland. It's convenience to the park area trails allowed us an early visit to the big kahuna - General Sherman, before the crowds arrive

@ Tunnel log & some iphone fun on the pano feature - jumping from one end to other ;)
Trail hike at Beetle Rock  - another good viewing point & easy hike from parking lot
Some towering facts about the Giant Sequoias : They have the thickest bark on earth, they actually depend on forest fires to regenerate, there're quite resistant to disease, the big trees start off as small

seeds, they produced the largest living organism (by volume, not height) on earth. These red cedar colored skyscrapers are rare as they can only grow along a narrow, 260 mile strip on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains, between 5000 and 7,000 ft. The other types of redwoods ie in Muir Woods are related yet different species. Giant Sequoias can live up to 3000 years and typically have much thicker trunks than Redwoods

... we hopscotched, climbed, hiked circular trails and traversed crescent meadows and took quick pics along the way, comparing our tiny selves juxtaposed against the huge majestic limbs of these venerable forest inhabitants
'Earth may be alive: not as the ancients saw her - a sentient Goddess with a purpose and foresight - but alive like a tree. A tree that quietly exists, never moving except to sway in the wind, yet endlessly conversing with the sunlight and the soil. Using sunlight and water and nutrient minerals to grow and change. But all done so imperceptibly, that to me the old oak tree on the green is the same as it was when I was a child. ' - James Lovelock
Our last hike was to Moro Rock -  its a concrete and stone laid path of over 350 steps to the top of a panoramic viewing granite platform. Along the way, spectacular scenic overlooks of the forest's canopy, the San Joaquin Valley to the west, The Great Western Divide's peaks become visible

Moro Rock is a great pinnacle point to view the setting sun, ...alas we were a bit early thus climbed to the adjacent granite dome where a boulder sat precariously on a ridge

En route to Laguna Beach, I had a hankering to see the iconic Mulholland Dr.  which so frequently featured in movie clips,  visit the scenic parkway that gives you a birds eye Universal City San Fernando Valley, Holleywood Bowl and widespan overlook of the city of angels LA

Can you spot the white Hollywood sign on the hill?

Our last destination of the trip -  The Inn at Laguna Beach - a nice oceanfront boutique inn

Our hotel is centrally located smack in the renowned Laguna beach walking path - beautifully landscaped accentuated by public works of art. The winding path leads all the

way to main town  & Heisler park. The public areas were well utilized where family BBQs and groups gathered in pockets enjoying the manicured lawns, ocean breeze, convival atmosphere and picturesque coastline

Found a fav place for lunch - The Cliff Restaurant where scallop sashimi was unrivaled 😋

Taking in the vibrant art scene in both Sawdust festival and the main exhibits at Pageant

Another
highlight - taking in their annual Pageant of the Masters - now in its 86th year. Its one of the most unique outdoor events and all held due to the volunteers! From set design, prof orchestra, sophisticated lighting, cast, elaborate makeup & costumes. This outdoor amphitheater amazes audiences with its 'tableaux vivants' - faithful recreations of classical and contemporary works of art. Real people posing to mimic the characters in the original pieces. A most treasured experience!

I confess, towards the middle of our trip, the ubiquitous west coast display of many variety of cacti and its colorful offshoots really grew on me. No wonder my daughter seemed partial to them while doing her wedding decor....as I mused over our patio pizza by rooftop bar of our inn, admiring pots adorning tables
There's just something about their stubby robustly protruding tips, looking fleshy & engorged with life giving moisture - yes succulents - a perfect word to describe them!

Local artists from the Sawdust festival recommended we dine at The Deck by the Pacific Edge Hotel- so here's our post dinner view from the patio ...very happening place obviously as we had to wait quite a bit for a table. It's ambience - typical young millennial coastal vibes and the sunset was fabulous, but as for the food, we much preferred The Cliff

Since we possess wheels, it's a given we should drive out from Laguna shores to explore its environs a bit - Dana Point, its marina, Doheny state beach & Salt Creek Beach, Ocean Institute... a gathering place for summer time festivals.  It holds a compelling & sweeping harbor view as you descend down from the roadside - the curvy road follows the cliffside to reveal its dramatic harbor. The town was named after Richard H. Dana, first to arrive on a trading ship 1835 & was entranced by the
romantic cliff-lined area. Lots of paddleboarding, surfing, sailing choices abound

A day spent on the beach next to our Inn & back to our Cliff oceanside table - best deal!

A last stroll along the Laguna Beach trail and taking in the pink glow of dusk

' Late afternoon on the West Coast ends with the sky doing all its brilliant stuff'
